The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
