Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
